Phuket in October: choose a hotel with a rain plan
A practical October 2026 hotel checklist for beach access, changeable sea conditions and days when swimming is off the agenda.

Why this matters
The Thai Meteorological Department forecast issued on 10 October 2026 expects scattered to fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rain on the southern west coast on 11–12 October, with thundershowers also possible later in the 10–16 October period. It warns that waves may exceed two metres in thundershowers and advises boats to keep clear of them. This is a dated forecast, not a prediction for every October day or every Phuket beach. If you are booking an October stay, choose a hotel that still works when the sea is unsafe: look at the route to restaurants, sheltered activities, transport and on-property facilities before comparing rooms.
01
Use the forecast as a planning check, not a promise
As of the 10 October TMD outlook for 10–16 October 2026, the west-coast forecast includes more widespread showers on 11–12 October and the possibility of waves above two metres in thunderstorms. Conditions can change by beach and hour. Check the latest TMD update shortly before travel and each morning, then follow beach flags, lifeguards and local authorities. Never treat a calm-looking hotel photograph as evidence that swimming or boat trips will be safe.
02
Pick a beach neighbourhood for non-beach hours too
Phuket Province describes Kamala as a quieter beach area with accommodation, restaurants and shops. It identifies Kata Yai and Kata Noi as two distinct beaches, so a hotel advertised as “Kata” may be closer to one than the other. Compare the actual property entrance, nearby meals and the walk to the beach. For a rain-affected day, being able to eat or relax without a long exposed transfer can matter more than a sea-view label.
03
Do not assume October swimming is safe
Phuket Province specifically advises against swimming at Nai Harn from May to October because of strong currents, and warns that Surin is unsuitable for swimming during monsoon conditions. Those are beach-specific cautions, not a complete island-wide safety map. Follow current warning flags and lifeguard instructions wherever you stay; if the water is closed or rough, stay out. Ask tour operators about weather-related decisions rather than assuming an island excursion will operate.
04
Build a two-plan hotel shortlist
For each candidate, write Plan A: a safe beach day if conditions permit, including the exact entrance-to-sand route. Then write Plan B: a rainy day with meals, indoor or sheltered activities and transport that do not depend on a boat. Compare whether the hotel has facilities you would actually use, and confirm any shuttle, accessibility feature or covered connection directly with the property. A beach name alone does not establish easy access.
05
Compare the reservation only after the location works
Check the exact room category, occupancy, breakfast, total payable amount, payment timing and cancellation deadline for your dates. If an excursion is central to the trip, ask its operator separately about weather cancellations and refunds; do not assume the hotel reservation covers them.
